Toy Line: Monster Wrestlers In My Pocket ( M.W.I.M.P. )

Sculpt Name(s): Shark Bite and Frank the Stone

Collector's Note: First of all, I can't believe it took me this long to create "custom" blank mini-figures and document them here at MXD. One-time contributor Matthew Fitz was working on some paint removal techniques years ago, but sadly disappeared from the hobby before he was able to show the results of his experimentation. Recently, current contributor nano Fatato posted a gorgeous image of a blank Gormiti figure from Hong Kong. This finally spurred me to try my hand at transforming painted mini-figures into BLANKO mini-figures! Nano, who was already working on some of his own, agreed and thought we should show before-and-after pics.

I would guess that most mini-figure collectors actually prefer their figures to be painted, or at least have some paint apps, but there are those of us out there who prefer our mini-figures to be monochromatic. We have seen many a mini-figure line fall short of its true potential due to a few washed-out paint apps. We're always left wondering what could have been. No more.

Blanko Figure Foto entries will be devoted to featuring painted mini-figures transformed into beautifully blank mini-figures! We hope you enjoy! (And don't be surprised if some non-mini-figure toys make appearances as well. I have found that any toy made blank looks infinitely better.)

As to the figures at hand, I've always admired the sculpts and base rubber colors of the MWIMPs. However, not being a fan of paint apps, I've always shied away from this line. I've always wondered what these pieces would look like mono. Now I know! I love 'em.

Chief Chirpa Galactic Heroes

Toy Line: Star Wars: Galactic Heroes

Sculpt Name: Chief Chirpa

Collector's Note: Ewoks aren't for everyone, but they are for me! I love them, and this little sculpt is one of my favorites. I would LOVE to have this sculpt in a blank colorway!

And just for shits and giggles, here's a pic of an Ewoks Chief Chirpa wax master taken by Ron Salvatore of The Star Wars Collectors Archive. If you're not familiar with that website, you should be! Be sure to check the site for a higher-res version of the image and more great pics! (I always love protos and wax masters, not for their rarity, but because they're always blank!)

MTG Beast of Burden

Card Series: Magic: The Gathering: 5th Series & 7th Series

McDonald's Pokémon Promotion

Name of Toy Line: McDonald's Black & White Pokémon Promotion

Manufacturing and Distribution: Nintendo & McDonald's

Years of Production: 2011

Countries/Regions Available: North America, Europe, and Oz

Size/Scale: 2-5"

Figure Trade Markings:

Approximate # of Figures: 8

Details: In 2011 two powerhouses, Nintendo and McDonald's, teamed up to produce a Happy Meal promotion for Pokémon Black and White, the first titles in the 5th generation of Pokémon video games made for the Nintendo DS.

In the US promotion, there were 8 figures and 12 cards offered. However, elsewhere, three of the figures were not released. I'm not sure why. See below.

US Release

Non-US Release

While I've never been a Pokémon fan - I've never played the games nor collected the toys and cards - I am a fan of Nintendo design aesthetics and McDonald's Happy Meal toys. Also, while I've never been into Pokémon, I've never hated it either. I love collecting cards and toys, so I can't begrudge anyone who collects Pokémon cards and toys. I can see the appeal. Furthermore, had there ever been a mono/blank line of Pokémon mini-figures, perhaps I would be a fan after-all!

Gormiti Figure Foto

Gormiti

Toy Line: Gormiti 2nd Series

Sculpt Name: Barbataus (Lord of the Forest)

Color: Acid Green

Collector's Note: This unpainted figure, straight from HK, is a good example on how cool would be a gormiti line of mono-colored figures. I don't see it happening though.. sigh.

Gormiti Figure Foto

Toy Line: Gormiti Battle Egg

Sculpt Name: Florus the Poisoner (Thanks to Aikola!)

Collector's Note: This line is based on the dissolving container gimmick that has been around for years, but which I've most recently encountered a few years ago with a BEN 10 mini-figure line. In this case, a single Gormiti is encased in a "Battle Egg." Once placed in water, the egg slowly dissolves revealing a tiny figure.

Apologies for the lack of comparison pics. The egg was roughly the size of a baseball, and the figure is about an inch tall. Which in my opinion means the dissolvable egg was much larger then necessary considering how small the figure is.

Wacky Packages Cardboard Close-Up

Wacky Packages

Card Series: Wacky Packages

Release Date: 2004-2008 Series

Collector's Note: Whilst I didn't collect these as a kid (I stuck with the GPKs) I have always been a fan - mostly of the art and design (love that thick black border!), not so much the painfully cheesy humor, haha.

Real Drive Mxd Media

Real Drive

Medium: Anime (Japanese Animation)

Property: Real Drive created by Production I.G and Masamune Shirow

About: Adapted from Wikipedia:
Real Drive is set in 2061 AD, fifty years after the development of the Network society. This new infrastructure was designed to create a utopia where people could directly connect with one another at the level of consciousness. As a result, an array of problems begin to occur such as personal data leaks and the spread of social disinformation. However, society has come to rely heavily on the Network and are unable to abandon it. [Sound familiar?]

In due course, a new Network realm with more effective security measures was developed. The security was designed to protect an individual's cyber-brain (a biological brain augmented with technology) from being hacked and having personal information stolen or tampered with. This new, more secure Network was called the Meta Real Network, nicknamed "The Metal." Yet problems persist with some individuals even becoming overwhelmed and allowing their consciousness to bleed into the Metal. Specialists called Cyber Divers investigate, decipher, and attempt to contain these aberrations in the Metal.
Master storyteller Masamune Shirow has been revealing his elegant yet scary vision of the Kurzweilian Singularity for years, most notably in his manga masterpiece Ghost in the Shell. A vision in which humans interface seamlessly with their technology. The world of Real Drive is no less fascinating (nor confusing). There's plenty of high-tech wizardry going on with zero explanation. However, just as one doesn't need to understand the chemical process of photosynthesis to enjoy a blooming flower, one doesn't need to see fictional code being compiled to enjoy the fantastical technology on display in Real Drive. And it's not all gadgets and virtual reality; the characters have real depth and personality, and the entire series is wrapped in a pleasant, sea- and diving-based motif.

The main characters are Cyber Diver Mr. Haru, Mr. Haru's intuitive assistant Minamo, an android named Holon, Minamo's brother Souta, and a Network architect, Eiichiro Kushima.

Of course I highly recommend checking it out! Also, so far, I haven't been able to find any Real Drive mini-figures. I'm not saying they're not out there though!

Gegege No Kitaro Figure Foto

Toy Line: Gegege No Kitaro

Sculpt Name: Daruma

Collector's Note: As with the DBZ entry a few days back, I've come up empty-handed after doing a web search for this character's name. If you know it, please let us know in the comments. Perhaps then we can discover what he's so grumpy about!

Says nano Fatato:
He's a Daruma, an egg-shaped doll for good luck and perseverance and also a symbol of physical or mental resilience because, if knocked over, he springs back up.
Thanks nano! :D

Rise of the Beasts

Rise of the Beasts

Name of Toy Line: Rise of the Beasts
Manufacturing and Distribution: Plastic Imagination, and Jon Karis/Little Rubber Guys
Years of Production: 2012 (projected)
Countries/Regions Available: Worldwide
Size/Scale: 2" (projected)
Figure Trade Markings:
Approximate # of Figures: 4 sculpts (projected)

Details: Via the ROTB Kickstarter page:

Rise of the Beasts is a new collectible offering in the spirit of classic 80's toylines like M.U.S.C.L.E., Battle Beasts, He-Man and Thundercats! Savage Beasts that radiate power combine with ancient technology long lost to modern man. Whether you are a fan of mini-monos or small, painted, articulated figures, you will LOVE these figures!

Series 1 consists of 4 figures - A Lion, a Gorilla, a Horned Toad and a Komodo Dragon. The first 3 beasts' heroic body styles were partially inspired by classic toy lines like Thundercats, Sectaurs and Masters of the Universe. The 4th is suggestive of the fantastic Battle Beasts line with its squat, muscular proportions. Series 1 will be made of PVC (like M.U.S.C.L.E.s, Battle Beasts, etc.), approximately 60mm tall, available in both painted and non-painted formats, with a weapon and joints at the shoulders.

Karis and the producers are currently seeking $11,000 in Kickstarter-pledged funds to begin moving forward with production of the line. They are offering a number of pledge options. If the potential of this intriguing toy line catches your interest and imagination, consider making a pledge! (If the goal amount seems overwhelming, keep in mind that at least one mini-figure line had great success via Kickstarter.)

Namakeshi

Name of Toy Line: Namakeshi
Manufacturing and Distribution: Nama Niku, Muscle Things, Marty "THEGODBEAST" Hanson, and Eric Nilla.
Years of Production: 2011-
Countries/Regions Available: Unknown
Size/Scale: 2"
Figure Trade Markings: *
Approximate # of Figures: 5 sculpts, dozens of colorways

Details: Namakeshi are the creations of the Nama Niku webmaster; Nama Niku is an English language website devoted to covering Kinnikuman related news. Kinnikuman is a Japanese property that began as a manga and has since been represented in anime; mini-figure, action figure, vinyl, and designer toy genres; video games; apparel; and more.
In brief, the Kinnikuman story centers on the goofy but super powerful, main character, Kinnikuman (Muscleman) and his struggles against a plethora of equally powerful evildoers. The story is incredibly rich with humor, creativity, originality, and charm. Since their origin in the golden 80's, Kinnikuman and "Kinkeshi" toys have overtly and subtly inspired countless artists and creators.
Mattel's M.U.S.C.L.E. toy line - which many Western collectors will recognize - used some of the sculpts from the Japanese Kinnikuman toy line but discarded the characters and story. While this allowed/forced Western collectors to create their own storyline and characters, we missed out on one of the greatest storylines to ever come out of Japan.

The Namakeshi proudly fall into the category of toys overtly inspired by Kinnikuman. In fact, Namakeshi are "kitbashed" sculpts, meaning they were created by using parts from Kinkeshi sculpts and original sculpture. *Thus in many cases, the original Kinnikuman keshi trademarkings, YSNT, can be seen on Namakeshi.
The author of Nama Niku tells us:
Nama Niku means "Raw Meat" in Japanese, and is a nod to the "niku" (肉) in Kinnikuman combined with the idea of raw/fresh Kinnikuman news.

Most of the figures I come up with are either an homage to something in the Kinnikuman universe, or a shout-out to the term Nama Niku (生肉) itself. For instance, the Meat Grinder is all about the Raw Meat!
