Lucky Yuckies figures show up in MUSCLE lots from time to time and are thus frequently in need of identification for those not familiar with them. Though the figures have been identified for years, finding packaging or documentation was a long time coming. Thanks to a tip from Eric Nilla, I was able to sn-izzle-atch 5 Lucky Yuckies mini-comics from eBay.

So I've got pages and pages of a very wacked out comic series to share with you all. Below is the cover - front and back - of book one. Enjoy!





Damn, I'm kind of glad I didn't find these as a child, haha. Much more to come in the future!

I've been interested in strange little rubber and plastic figures ever since I first laid eyes on MUSCLE and Monster in My Pocket toys as a kid. Since then I've collected everything from popular mini figure lines to bootlegs, vending machine figures and other obscurities. I created this site to compile information and photos on various mini figure lines. I'd love to hear from fellow collectors or anyone who has more details on some of the unidentified stuff here.

There are lots of toy websites on the interwebs, but only a very small percentage of them focus exclusively on mini figures. Thus, when Little Weirdos: A Collection of Mini Figures was created, my interest was immediately piqued. Since I've been visiting the site (or rather, following via RSS) a number of identified and unidentified mini figures have been featured.

Not unlike MXD, the author doesn't attempt to provide exhaustive coverage of toy lines. Each entry is composed of a number of high-quality pictures of a few examples of figures from a toy line; often a comparison shot with a figure from another mini fig line is featured as well. Each entry concludes with a bit of information about the featured toy line, and links to sources of more information are sometimes offered.

Gweek is a weekly podcast where the editors and friends of Boing Boing talk about comic books, science fiction and fantasy, video games, board games, tools, gadgets, apps, and other neat stuff.

I've been enjoying Gweek during my daily commute for about 2 weeks now. I thoroughly enjoy and would like to recommend it. It's just as the description says, no more, no less. Each episode essentially consists of a few people - usually 2-3 - introducing and describing the interesting things listed above. Mark, the host, asks each person to share their weekly picks one at a time. After the pick is shared and described, a brief discussion typically ensues.

Mark is a great host. Very soft spoken and his enthusiasm for artists and their creations comes bubbling through. At least one reviewer described Mark as awkward and shy, but I have to disagree. He may not be a great, mellifluous orator, but he's well spoken and does a good job of keeping everyone on track. (He does use the word cool a lot though. But it doesn't bother me.) The panelists do a good job of being concise and also not speaking over each other.

Real Drive is set in 2061 AD, fifty years after the development of the Network society. This new infrastructure was designed to create a utopia where people could directly connect with one another at the level of consciousness. As a result, an array of problems begin to occur such as personal data leaks and the spread of social disinformation. However, society has come to rely heavily on the Network and are unable to abandon it. [Sound familiar?]

In due course, a new Network realm with more effective security measures was developed. The security was designed to protect an individual's cyber-brain (a biological brain augmented with technology) from being hacked and having personal information stolen or tampered with. This new, more secure Network was called the Meta Real Network, nicknamed "The Metal." Yet problems persist with some individuals even becoming overwhelmed and allowing their consciousness to bleed into the Metal. Specialists called Cyber Divers investigate, decipher, and attempt to contain these aberrations in the Metal.

Master storyteller Masamune Shirow has been revealing his elegant yet scary vision of the Kurzweilian Singularity for years, most notably in his manga masterpiece Ghost in the Shell. A vision in which humans interface seamlessly with their technology. The world of Real Drive is no less fascinating (nor confusing). There's plenty of high-tech wizardry going on with zero explanation. However, just as one doesn't need to understand the chemical process of photosynthesis to enjoy a blooming flower, one doesn't need to see fictional code being compiled to enjoy the fantastical technology on display in Real Drive. And it's not all gadgets and virtual reality; the characters have real depth and personality, and the entire series is wrapped in a pleasant, sea- and diving-based motif.

The main characters are Cyber Diver Mr. Haru, Mr. Haru's intuitive assistant Minamo, an android named Holon, Minamo's brother Souta, and a Network architect, Eiichiro Kushima.

Of course I highly recommend checking it out! Also, so far, I haven't been able to find any Real Drive mini-figures. I'm not saying they're not out there though!

About: In this surprisingly entertaining little comic, we learn the origins of the Monsters In My Pocket! It all began with a civil disagreement between Vampire and Warlock about who should rule over monsterkind. They agree to let their fellow monsters decide and travel around the globe recruiting the most notorious beasts and creeps to their respective sides. But all is not as it seems, as Warlock is hatching a sinister plan. However, not even he is prepared for the shocking event that takes place...

Besides the story and artwork, the comic has a few, fun obligatory advertisements to enjoy.

About: These are two pages from an issue of Comp-Rex, a keshi-focused toy magazine published by the famous Japanese collectibles vendor Mandarake.

The issue these pages come from was dedicated entirely to Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z keshigomu. The quality and variety of Dragon Ball keshi is comparable to the range of Kinnikuman keshi.

The main reason I chose to feature these two pages is the series which spans both pages. It is a keshi line that includes fun little accessory vehicles and buildings! The depth and variety of Japanese keshi toy lines never cease to amaze me. It truly is one of the greatest toy genres to collect and admire.

About: This is a page from a keshi-focused toy magazine called Comp-Rex, published by the famous Japanese collectibles vendor Mandarake.

Pictured is a kinkeshi figure in a rare, solid black colorway. If you were hoping for a translation, I'm sorry, can't do. (I was able to run the scanned kanji through Google Translator, but what came out the other end was barely readable.) However, what I can do is post more scans from issues of this awesome zine in the future!

Inspiration: I love Spiral Zone Keshi and am willing to admit that I am an addict when collecting them. :D This is my first time drawing them and decided to go with the same style that graces the pamphlets that come with these figures in the capsules.
