Toy Line: Battle Beast [Bootleg]

Sculpt Name: Crusty Crab (?)

Color: Yellow

Collector's Note: This bootleg Battle Beast appears to be a version of Crusty Crab, but we don't know for certain. The figure originated in Greece, the home of the Greek Battle Beasts. We would love to know if there are other sculpts available!

Garbage Pail Kids

Name of Card Set: Garbage Pail Kids
Production Company: The Topps Company, Inc.
Year of Production: 1985 - Present

Details:

Honestly, you knew it was coming. After all, how could a site dedicated to toys and (recently) cards not feature one of the biggest non-sport releases of all time? Garbage Pail Kids were released in 1985, and began to take the collecting world by storm less than a year later. Made ever-so-popular by boys who wanted to annoy girls that cherished their Cabbage Patch Dolls, these parody stickers made headlines around the country. During their first run, collectors were blessed with 15 series. Each series was sold in wax packs containing 5 stickers and 1 stick of gum. And perhaps best of all...each pack sold for 25 cents!! The card fronts consisted of an 'a' and 'b' version of each character, only differing by name...and the backs featured a wide variety of certificates, comics and puzzle pieces.

And wouldn't you know it...Topps decided to resurrect this series back in 2001 with the 'All-New Series'. To date, there have been 7 new series, and one 'Flashback' series. While purists have ridiculed the recent series for inconsistent and sub-par artwork, there are still a lot of great images to behold.

And don't look for any slowing down now, as artists are still lining up to work on this series, evidenced by the fact there's been over 25 different artists to work on GPK since it's inception. Flashback Series 2 has a release date of January 2011, so head out to the stores and support this amazing (and persistent) collectible.

Ghostbusters II

Name of Card Set: Ghostbusters II
Production Company: The Topps Company, Inc.
Year of Production: 1989
Pack Contents: 8 cards, 1 sticker, 1 stick bubble gum

Details:

In an effort to capitalize on the popularity of the Ghostbusters sequel, Topps released a series of trading cards related to the movie. The cards were printed on standard cardboard stock, featuring a scene from the movie on the front, with little portions of the plot on the back. If a collector were to compile a complete set, they would be able to combine the images from the front of the cards, with the storyline on the back, and have a good idea what took place on the big screen. And just like any great 80's collectible, the captions on the front of the Ghostbusters II cards feature a nice combination of 'cheese' and 'lack of effort' from the design team.

As mentioned, each pack of Ghostbusters II cards (pictured at the top of this post) came with a sticker. The stickers were typically an artists rendition of characters or scenes from the movie on the front, and a puzzle piece on the back. The completed puzzle resembled the Ghostbusters II movie poster.

Toy Line: Kinnikuman

Sculpt Name: Horumon Yahki

Color: Flesh/Peach

Collector's Note: This sculpt is also known as "Drunken Master" by some collectors. This sculpt is one of several Kinnikuman keshi sculpts that were not made into Mattel M.U.S.C.L.E. toys. Why certain sculpts such as this one were not made into M.U.S.C.L.E.s remains a mystery. However, although this sculpt was not part of the official release of M.U.S.C.L.E. toys (i.e. is not featured on the M.U.S.C.L.E. poster), a few examples of this sculpt have been found in M.U.S.C.L.E. plastic.

Toy Line: M.U.S.C.L.E.

Sculpt Name: Pandaman

Color: Faded Orange

Collector's Note: This is the only M.U.S.C.L.E. figure that I still own from my childhood collection. As with all my M.U.S.C.L.E. figures, I acquired it by trading something for it to one of my friends. This figure is actually faded in the front, presumably from the sun. It was always my favorite figure. When I played as a child, I always granted this figure the special power of "never being knocked down." So no matter who or what this figure encountered, it could never be knocked down!

Thanks to LRG member Uoozuman, I was actually able to share this story, and the impact Kinnikuman/M.U.S.C.L.E. had on my childhood, with one of the creators of Kinnikuman/M.U.S.C.L.E., Shimada-sensei of the famed Yudetamago.

In fact, if it weren't for Yudetamgo and Kinnikuman, Toypedia wouldn't exist!

Toy Line: Star Wars

Sculpt Name: R2D2

Color: Yellow

Collector's Note: This figure is high quality and does not appear to be a bootleg. Trade marking on the back include © GMFGI, which appears to mean General Mills Fun Group Inc. and may be/have been a subdivision of Kenner. (I'm sure it's documented somewhere.) So to answer your questions... yes, there are other Star Wars keshi out there. :)
