Lucky Yuckies

Lucky Yuckies

Property: Lucky Yuckies

Medium: Mini Comic

About: Lucky Yuckies were Western vending machine figures released in the mid-80's that were bootlegs of the Japanese keshi toy line Gegege No Kitarō.

The creepfest continues with the final scans from book one of the Lucky Yuckies comics. (I think "Stone Monster" needs to eat a bran muffin...)

Dragon Ball Mxd Media

Property: Dragon Ball

Medium: Magazine

About: These are two pages from an issue of Comp-Rex, a keshi-focused toy magazine published by the famous Japanese collectibles vendor Mandarake.

The issue these pages come from was dedicated entirely to Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z keshigomu. The quality and variety of Dragon Ball keshi is comparable to the range of Kinnikuman keshi.

The main reason I chose to feature these two pages is the series which spans both pages. It is a keshi line that includes fun little accessory vehicles and buildings! The depth and variety of Japanese keshi toy lines never cease to amaze me. It truly is one of the greatest toy genres to collect and admire.

Kinnikuman Mxd Media

Property: Kinnikuman

Medium: Magazine

About: This is a page from a keshi-focused toy magazine called Comp-Rex, published by the famous Japanese collectibles vendor Mandarake.

Pictured is a kinkeshi figure in a rare, solid black colorway. If you were hoping for a translation, I'm sorry, can't do. (I was able to run the scanned kanji through Google Translator, but what came out the other end was barely readable.) However, what I can do is post more scans from issues of this awesome zine in the future!

OMFG!
Bad Eggz MUSCLE Can

OMFG!
RBT MUSCLE Can

OMFG!
Mecha Brains

OMFG!
Keshi Thingz

Inspiration: Haha, okay, those are all crap-o names, but I'm just having fun. These are my submissions for OMFG! Series Two. If you haven't heard, OMFG! Series One has been fully funded. In fact, it took just five days of pledging. However, pledges are still being accepted; according to George of the October Toys website, coordinator of the project, additional funds will be used to make more colors and Series Two! Of course, you can also pledge just to make sure you get your share of Series One figures!

Medium: Pencil

Artist's Note: The first two characters, the BEB and RBT guys, were inspired by the M.U.S.C.L.E. can. I've always been a fan, not just of minifigs, but of their packaging and packaging art as well. I would love to see the iconic M.U.S.C.L.E. can incorporated in to OMFG! S2 in some way, shape, or form.

Mecha Brains (a play on Mega Brains) is simply an attempt on my part to pull two of my favorite toy concepts together: Brains and Mechas!

Finally we have Keshi Thingz. I love keshi, plain and simple; I think everything in keshi form is awesome. Doesn't matter what it is, if you make it in the form of a keshi in pink, light blue, green, or whatever colors, I've got to have it! Keshi Thingz is the perfect way to make everything into a keshi. It could be a mini M.U.S.C.L.E. can, a hamster, a mini Nintendo Wii, a mini iPhone, a toe, a one-eyed anteater, the list goes on.

Check out the OMFG! Series Two Submission Toypedia Flickr set to see all of the entries so far, with more coming every day. Or follow along with the OMFG! Series Two thread @ October Toys.

Artist: OZWORKSHOP

Medium: Minecraft

Name of Piece: ■ MINECRAFT GHIBLI WORLD ■

About: Where to start? Studio Ghibli is the animation film studio of Hayao Miyazaki. He is responsible for such animated works as Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and many other amazing movies.

Minecraft is a video game in which players have the ability to literally build worlds, block by block; imagine a digital version of Lego.

Combine the two and you get: Minecraft Ghibli World! Those builings, mountains, and other structures you see in the video above were built piece by piece, block by block. They weren't simply rendered in photoshop. I do know that players can employ bots that help them build mass structures, but it's still essentially built in the same fashion as a Lego block structures.

So what does this have to do with minifigures or cards? Unfortunately, nothing. But how cool would it be if there were Studio Ghibli keshi? Considering Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki are products of Japan, I can't believe there aren't!

(Hopefully someone will soon contact me and tell me I'm wrong!)

Name of Piece: Ninja - Greenbox987

About: According to the artist, this piece was inspired by a Bazaar Item post featuring a Super Ninja-kun keshi.

In an interesting twist of fate, the artist has apparently named the piece after the individual who was selling the figure on Yahoo Japan! I'm thinking that may have been an accident, but it's still kinda cool nonetheless.

Inspiration: I love Spiral Zone Keshi and am willing to admit that I am an addict when collecting them. :D This is my first time drawing them and decided to go with the same style that graces the pamphlets that come with these figures in the capsules.

Artist's Note: Pencil drawing inked, then colored in Photoshop.

Inspiration: I was looking at my Mega Man Mechs today and thought it would be funny if Muscle man tried to drive it... He's a little bigger than Mega Man. :D

Artist's Note: I used my trusty 0.5 mech-pencil. It took just under an hour.

Return of the Jedi
Credit: The Dork Dimension

Artist: Kenner

Medium: Photography

Name of Piece: Return of the Jedi Collections

About: Above is an image grabbed from a Star Wars catalog recently featured at The Dork Dimension. Visit there to see hi-res images of the entire catalog.

I am always mesmerized by these catalogs. I think they're gorgeous! As I am quite fond of saying, I wish there were catalogs like this for minifigure lines such as Bad Eggz Bunch, MUSCLE, and MUSCLEMANIA. Maybe someday a collector will try to make a custom catalog for one of those toy lines...

Be sure to check The Dork Dimension for previously featured catalogs and note that there are sure to be more featured there in the future.

Doraemon in the cross-hairs!

Artist: Soupie

Medium: LEGO

Name of Piece: WALKr v0.00

About: Inspired by my love of keshi mech minifigures and recently the incredible work of Fredo, I decided to try my hand at building a LEGO mech. Afterall, I had spent hundreds of hours as a kid "building LEGOs," as I called it.

So I dug out my LEGO bricks and started slapping pieces together. I had a general idea in my head of what I wanted, but I didn't get anywhere near it. My piece selection was incredibly limited. Many times, I had one or two pieces and a great idea, but needed two more to make the idea work. I also had to use a lot of jank, chewed-up pieces. The legs were the hardest part. It's also when I felt most limited in my piece selection. Thus, the build I ended up using was very fragile, so I had to customize some pieces to reinforce it.

All-in-all, it was terrible fun! It's an amazing creative outlet. I believe this will be the first of many builds to come.
